Mono No Aware is a publication that educates readers on the traditions of Japanese wood-block paintings also formerly known as ukiyo-e. In today's culture, most people know the famous Great Wave painting by Hokusai but many of them do not the origins and the meaning behind the grand painting. Mono No Aware first talks about the culture of Japan in the Edo Period when ukiyo-e was first popularized in Japan. Then it goes into all of the branches of ukiyo-e such as landscape, erotic, kabuki/theatre, etc. And finally the book also talks about how the culture of ukiyo-e inspired a lot of today's world such as the origins of Japanese comics known as manga. Through this book, readers will be able to grasp not only the history of ukiyo-e paintings but also understand that each of the paintings served as some kind of purpose.
